My path to silversmithing
Hi, Ann-Charlotte here!
Maybe you’d like to know how it all started, the gateway to my jewelry making and small business act925.
In the summer of 2014, I decided to travel to Malmö and take a silversmithing course with master Ove Johansson. It’s been 8 years now—time flies! And you know what? On the very first day in the workshop, I began working on my heart rings, which have become so loved and popular. I sat there sawing these tiny delicate hearts out of sheets of brass, bronze, and silver. I still love it to this day!
After just one week in Ove’s workshop, with his guidance, I was completely hooked, just as I thought I would be. Creativity has always been a part of my life, the materials have varied, and so have the techniques. But the memory of a silver ring I received as a child from my grandmother has always stayed with me. Now, I decided to embrace that memory and give it a try. What joy!
It only took a few weeks before I packed my suitcase again and took the bus to Malmö for the second time that summer. My visits to my mentor and silversmith, Ove, have been many; I’ve basically been a sort of apprentice. His passion and positive attitude toward taking chances—combined with all his expertise in silversmithing and craftsmanship—kept taking me to new levels.
That same summer, I started act925—act is, of course, my initials, and 925 refers to sterling silver, meaning 92.5% silver with the rest being alloy.
Silversmithing, silversmith, jewelry making, jewelry smithing—it’s essentially the same technique a goldsmith uses when creating their jewelry, but I very rarely work with gold.
So stay tuned!
Hugs and kisses from the silversmith behind act925.
